Sciatica can be crippling

Sciatica can be crippling

Dr. Garima Anandani, 5 years ago

It is an unhappy prospect when one is as accustomed to pain as Sarika was. The joy of bringing life into the world had been dulled by the near-constant presence of pain she would feel on her back and hip. A closet singer and amateur dancer, Sarika had a cheerful disposition and an optimistic outlook to life until the unprecedented happened.

She couldn’t really pinpoint when it began but the sporadic incidences of pain that started at her hip and back were not only more frequent but also now reaching her calf and sometimes toes. Her son was now six years old and although his innocent fun-filled antics brought her merriment and much-needed diversions, he could be more than a handful. Her days as an art school teacher were now history. Leaving her much-loved life calling, as she gleefully called it, had been the proverbial nail in the coffin to the unfortunate circumstances Sciatica brought her to.

On good days, she could hardly stand for few minutes to quickly finish her chores before she knew the ache would set it, making it difficult to even walk back to the sofa from her kitchen. She had eventually stopped addressing concerns by her friends and neighbours about her inactive social presence, knowing she was slowly becoming a recluse due to her disabling pain. She was being mocked by her in-laws and sadly her own parents for citing back and leg pain as the reason for not being the ideal daughter-in-law in the very traditional Indian household.

To her credit, she had tried bearing it. She seldom told anyone about the ache she would feel along with the occasional pins and needles sensation, which was now a common feature of her busy life as a new mother and art school teacher. Her helpful and supportive husband had been a constant pillar of support and a shield from the censure of her in-laws. Medicines had not helped her. She had consulted many orthopaedics, homeopaths, ayurvedic doctors. Some treatments gave her temporal relief from pain before she began dreading reoccurrence of her nemesis. She was upset with how pain was changing her. She was irritable, drained, unable to give an eager ear to her son’s delightful accounts of his day at school, and beyond tired of the unrest that had set in her life due to Sciatica.

She made it her agenda to know as much as she could about Sciatica. From what she gathered, the pain that began in her back and hip and was now till all the way down her leg was due to the Sciatic nerve being affected. The numerous consults with varied doctors over the years had made her understand that her current state was a cumulative effect of the compression of the Sciatic nerve during pregnancy and the herniation of her spinal discs. The recent symptoms of weakness in her right leg had scared her, bringing her to take another opinion on her condition.

She was told she needed surgery to relieve the compression over the Sciatic nerve. When she asked if she could be pain-free after the surgery was done, she was informed that although surgical intervention showed 80% to 90% success, research showed the chances of recurrence after discectomy were as high as 21%. Her stint with Sciatica had crippled her, limiting her existence, and stealing away her freedom to enjoy life without the shackles of pain. Could she even dream of living a life free of Sciatica?
