How to prevent back pain from returning?

Dr. Sara Ansari, 5 years ago

Back pain is very common these days but most people tend to ignore it. Some types of back pain can be treated with rest while some types of back pain keep returning and eventually leave you bedridden. If back pain is ignored, it can also lead to surgery. “You can only treat a problem once you fully understand it”

Step 1: Understanding Your Spine

Our spine is composed of 4 components: bones, discs, nerves, and muscles (major supporting structure). Muscle is a soft tissue found in every individual. They are responsible for supporting the skeleton, maintaining change in posture, holding internal organs on its place and movement of food through the digestive tract. Muscles play a part in every function of the body, from circulation to mobility. The muscular system is made up of over 600 muscles which include smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscles. One can only control the function of skeletal muscles.

Step 2: Find the Real Cause of the Pain

80 % back pain is mechanical in nature which means the source of the pain may be originating in spinal joints, discs, nerves and Soft muscle tissue. Yet, patients to undergo imaging tests like MRI & X Rays. The truth is that Imaging tests may reveal structural issues of the spine but shows only half the picture. Newer Tests like i.e. Digital Spine Analysis (DSA) are advanced spine function tests which measures the strength, mobility, and balance of all the elements of Spinal musculature. This provides a complete and accurate functional profile of the patient’s spine and helps in isolating the muscles groups which are weakest. Just like a stress test for your heart, a DSA can identify the weaknesses in your spine & help determine the real cause of your pain.

Step 3: Try Spine Rehabilitation First

Our spine composed of a number of muscles which support the movements of the back such as forward bending, backward bending, side bending, and rotations. They are also responsible for maintaining postures. Any injury, weakness or trauma leads to the inefficiency of these muscles and thus reduced support to our body. This needs a proper healing time and a rehabilitation program to regenerate your soft muscle tissues. In fact, the European, American & Australian Guidelines recommend Spine Rehabilitation as the most effective treatment for back pain. A good Spine Rehabilitation programme can also help you avoid surgery. Always consult a Specialised Spine Physiotherapist before starting your spine rehabilitation programme.

Step 4: Be Patient & Regular

Just like a medicine needs to be taken in certain doses at specific times, rehabilitation, must be followed strictly. There are no shortcuts for healing a bone fracture and there is no shortcut for regenerating & rebuilding soft muscle tissue. Regular rehabilitation is the only answer to back pain. 12- 24 weeks are recommended basis the severity of your pain.
