Latest study reveals 1 in 4 mothers ignore their health

Mothers are the backbone of the family & always put the needs of their family first, often neglecting their own health. It comes as no surprise that almost 70% of patients suffering from chronic pain are women.
Lower back pain is the most common complaint we see in women especially new mothers. As they age, women are prone to faster degeneration of skeletal structures. The change in hormone levels & muscle strain lead to spine damage over time.”, Shweta Wadhwa, Spine Specialist, QI Spine Clinic.
Most women delay their treatment until it is too late. That is why it is up to their loved ones to help them learn to look after themselves. This Mother’s Day, here are 5 tips to help your mother deal with chronic pain

1.Inspire her to stay active

Exercise is tedious for many people but you can make this into an opportunity to bond with your mother. Help your mother get physically active by taking evening walks together or enrolling her into a group yoga or gift her a digital pedometer.

2.Help her sleep better:

Women generally tend to give less attention to the amount of rest they require. Sleep posture also plays an important role in keeping problems like back pain at bay. Gift your mother a cervical neck pillow or a knee spacer to help her get sound and pain-free sleep.

3.Keep track of their medication & doctor appointments:

Invest in a pill organiser or download a reminder app on her phone. Ensure they keep their appointments with their physicians at regular intervals.

4.Notice the signs early:

Most mothers will not tell you when they are in pain. They tend to ignore their symptoms and so it becomes important for us to keep an eye out. Here is how you can be more observant to their pain symptoms:
  • Have they suddenly stopped engaging in physical or social activities like bending or walking?
  • Do they have difficulty performing routine tasks?
  • Do they wince when standing or sitting or changing posture?
  • Do they have difficulty waking up?
  • Has their gait or posture changed?
Catching these signs early can help them avoid the mistake of avoiding their health and seek help from a spine specialist early.

5.Get More Regular with Check-Ups:

Going for routine medical check-ups can help your mother get timely medical attention. Ensure routine check-ups for known health problems especially spine problems. A spine function test can identify damage to your spine muscle tissue early. You only have one spine, it is important to take care of it.
